QATAR 2022 WORLD CUP

The world cup season is here with us again. For a Month, football fans will enjoy a 32-team tournament divided into eight groups. Rich people will be heading to Qatar, the host country. Most football lovers, l included, will be following the football extravaganza from the television sets. I do clearly remember that long ago; all the world cup matches were televised live by the national broadcaster KBC and all who owned television sets watched the matches from the comfort of their living room. Then something unexpected happened, and the national broadcaster stopped televising world cup games. Only Pay television channels will be televising the football extravaganza. It led to all entertainment joints buying large television screens and paying the subscription for the pay television channels for their clients to watch football at their joints. This led to football lovers moving away from their homes to these entertainment joints. The entertainment joints rake in big business during events such as the world cup. What happened to our national broadcaster to stop televising world cup matches? These will be a story for another day, but today we want to examine how the world cup has evolved.

During this world cup season, I expect football lovers to watch most of the matches from their living rooms because of more digital television channels airing the world cup. The channels have also been pocket friendly, enabling many to afford the costs. Many more will watch from entertainment joints to enjoy with friends and colleagues.

One of the introductions to the current football scene is sports betting. One wonders whether its effect on the great game will be positive or negative. There have been stories linked to suicide for the love of a particular team. With sports betting, such social ills may increase when one bets on a lot of money or assets. Sports betting needs control otherwise, it may negatively affect the enjoyment of the sport.

In 1930, the first world cup tournament was held, under FIFA president Jules Rimet who put this idea of an international football tournament in place. In the first world cup, 13 teams were called for the tournament. Since then, world cup has expanded to the current 32 teams participating in the final tournament, preceded by a 2-year qualifying process involving over 200 teams from around the world. The world cup matches have a format where the teams are put in groups of 4 teams that play league, and the two top teams in terms of points and goals scored qualify for the second round of the knockout stage. The number of points awarded to a winning team has also changed. Since inception, the winning team was awarded two points, a tie was a point each, and a loss no point but, in the year 1994 things changed, the winning team was now being awarded three points while a tie remained a point each and as for loss no points were awarded.

I believe the video-assisted referee was born out of the 1986 world cup match where Argentina was playing against England, where Argentine star Diego Maradona scored a winning goal using his hand, popularly known as ‘the hand of god’. The referees have goal-detecting watches, which vibrate anytime the ball passes the goal line, which ensured all goals scored count. The changes will be used for the first time in 2022 in the Qatar FIFA world cup.

There have been two iterations of the world cup trophy. Jules Rimet's trophy was the first world cup trophy and was in use from 1930 to 1970. The trophy was known as Victory, commonly called the Coupe du Monde (French for World Cup), was 35 cm in height, and weighed 3.8kg. It was won by Brazil permanently after being three times winners in 1958, 1962, and 1970. It was on record that the first country to win the world cup thrice would keep it perpetually. The FIFA World Cup 1974 to present is a trophy 36.5 cm tall and is made of 6.175kg of 18 karats (75%) gold. It has a circular base 13 cm in diameter, made of two layers of malachite.
