Value-Based Education

Value-based education is a curriculum that empowers learners with universal positive human values such as respect, integrity, honesty, and compassion. VBE provides a teaching environment in which learners experience those positive universal values firsthand throughout their schooling. I am bringing out this topic because Kenya currently is reviewing its education curriculum and believe by inculcating values in the curriculum will go a long way in enriching and producing a holistic graduate learner who is morally upright and competent. An effective VBE environment has three components; the values are developed into an ethical vocabulary that empowers learners and staff to articulate basic and advanced ethical concepts. Secondly, the school creates time and space for learners to develop reflective practices so that their value experiences can be processed into a living guide to self and interpersonal awareness. Thirdly, the school administration must ensure adherence to the values and ensure it becomes a guide to all stalk holders' way of life. Through VBE, the ills affecting our country such as corruption may be resolved in a big way. There has also been a challenge of students burning schools, especially boarding schools. One of the key outcomes of this curriculum is cohesiveness between teachers, students, parents, and other workers in the school. Other benefits of the VBE include fostering a school ethos that emphasizes quality holistic education with an emphasis on high personal morals and academic standards. Creating personal and school harmony by introducing an ethical consideration of value words such as peace, cooperation, care, and respect which are learned by hearing, reading, reflecting on, writing about discussing, and practicing. Developing emotional intelligence by talking about their feelings, Pupils learn to express themselves more clearly and able to control their behaviors and empathize with others.
