The Impact of Technology
Technology is the practical application of knowledge to solve human challenges or to make life easier. There have been a lot of technological advancements in medicine, communications, construction, agriculture, etc. The impact of technology in today's world cannot be gainsaid, most people can’t live without smartphones, laptops, and other day-to-day devices that have flooded the market. In this article, we will critically look at the impact of technology on the environment, service delivery, talent, and leadership.
THE ENVIRONMENT
Technology has a negative impact on the environment. When new devices and gadgets, are manufactured, they cause emissions of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. This air pollution has led to an increase in global average temperature, known as climate change. Climate change has resulted in devastating drought and flooding, adversely affecting the lives and livelihood of people living in these areas. Air pollution also causes respiratory diseases such as asthma and other breathing complications.
Mass water pollution by industrial effluents of harmful chemicals and toxins flow into water bodies. Technological development has led to faster use of resources than can be naturally replenished, which has caused an ecological imbalance. Technology requires the mining of rare elements and minerals. The process of mining is in itself polluting and damaging to the environment.
Some technology companies have made deliberate efforts to pursue, eco-friendly processes to reduce the negative impact of technology on the environment. Other companies have undertaken green energy utilization to cut the negative impact on the environment. The aspect of frequent change in technology making consumers frequently change their gadgets to benefit from innovation should be discouraged to reduce solid wastage management challenges.
SERVICE DELIVERY
The impact of technology on service delivery has been positive. The effects of innovation on service delivery are enormous and unstoppable due to the many benefits. Automation of services has not only improved efficiency and effectiveness but also saved time. A good example is the introduction of ATMs in the banking sector. Few and fewer people are served by bank tellers, whose functions are now more specialized. The introduction of mobile banking has enabled customers to undertake banking transactions from the comfort of their living rooms. Today the World Wide Web is facilitating producers of goods and services to sell their products worldwide. Likewise, consumers can buy whatever they want from anywhere in the world.
TALENT
The impact of technology on talent management has been positive. Unlike in the yesteryears when recruiters used to post vacancies in newspapers and magazines, today you only need to post it online, and anyone in the world can apply for the job. Video conferencing is facilitating companies to train their staff effectively with renowned trainers sourced worldwide. Costs are lower because the staff are trained while seated in their offices, and provided a good network presence. Companies can effectively retain their talent by constantly getting employees’ feedback through online surveys. Through feedback, they can target their motivation by following employees' needs.
LEADERSHIP
The impact of technology on leadership is positive, and the benefits are many. Remote working has been on the rise, especially after Covid 19 many accepted the possibility of employees working from home. With technology, leaders can allow employees to work from any location other than the office, provided the employees are dedicated to offering the best to the company. Through this, the employee is more motivated and reduces costs in terms of office space. Technology has provided an array of ways of communication, and therefore one can get tasks accomplished with each employee in real-time.
Technology is changing all aspects of business, and it is now time to choose the right tools to be served well. Technology, especially automation must facilitate human beings but not replace them.
